Water flooded my Mac ---Need to recover data in SSD 12+16 pin

[

Block Image

Hello Experts,

Water flooded my Mac and spoiled my motherboard.

I put the 12 plus 16 pin SSD inside a similar Mac but it does not come up. I notice that some of the pins are also looking stained. Some say it can be read through Linux by mounting as /dev but I need another option.

Is there any way I can recover my data?

Best Regards,

Kingsley

Update (04/06/2018)

Dan,

I used Methylated Spirit to clean the pads. I don't know if its better than before. Can you confirm

Block Image

the name of the chemical for cleaning gold/copper?

Or do you feel I could try it based on the picture

Thanks

Can you post some clear images of your SSD showing us the chips and the connector on both sides so we have an idea how bad it is.

Looks better! the black junk is gone! But you didn't use a Pink eraser! You need to polish off the film thats still present. The gold surface still tarnishes as its not pure enough.

As to what I use is an over the counter metal polish "Twinkle" its a paste which I apply using a cotton swab (Q-Tip) and then I wipe off the surface with distilled water and dry it with a paper towel.

I have used HCL diluted and it has virtually cleaned the surface. I would now either look for another Mac my spec or try to purchase the casing as recommended. I would send the result once I have done it. @danj , thanks in advance

Do you mean diluted Hydrochloric Acid?? It's not something I would use here.

I'm not sure if the film residue will come off with it which is why I was pointing you to a mild abrasive (pink pencil eraser or metal polish).

Unfortunately, I just put into another laptop and it didn't even come on again. Looks like the HCL has bridged the pins or so. What do you think?

How does the other side look? If it's the same you might be able to clean the contacts with a pink pencil eraser. Carefully rub the eraser following the pads direction from the component side of the pad down to the bottom edge of the pad for the small pads and side to side on the larger pads. First do a few strokes on the larger pads to see if the black staining comes off if it's not you'll need to use something stronger a good metal polish which does gold & copper should work as well. This time use a cotton swab dipping it into the cleaner and again following the grain of the pad.

Post a picture once you've finished so we can see if we need to do something to patch up the contacts. In any case once you get your stuff off I think it would be best to throw this SSD away.

As to getting to your files you'll need to use another Mac to retrieve them and you'll need this: OWC Envoy Pro Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 Enclosure - For Apple Flash SSDs (June 2013-Current Mac Models). Its a bit pricy but it does work quite effectively! You might find one on eBay for less as like you once you've pull your data off it's not much use. In any case you can always sell it afterwards to recoup some of the cost.

Looks like you're lost one of the SMT components (cap)

Sorry to say your SSD needs repairs before you can salvage its data. Can you find a second SSD which to steal the missing cap from? Otherwise you'll need to send the SSD to a company like Drive Savers which have the needed supplies and tools to salvage your data.

Ok, Thanks for all the effort Dan. I will open discussion with Drive Savers immediately.

Put that thing in rice for a few days to extract all the moisture! Then hope its all out or remove it from its housing and plug it into an external hard drive housing and plug it into another mac and hope for the best

Update (04/05/2018)

Oh um wash it off with isopropyl alcohol and let it evaporate off

Forget the Rice! It really doesn't work! This is an old urban legend thats just not true!

Sorry @seth_123 - Sorry no magic here. You need to remove the battery and wash the system out with Distilled water if you hav anything corrosive or surgery. Rain & tap water tend to have minerals which ionize when electrical current is present that needs to be cleaned too with distilled water. If the system has any corrosion staining you need to physically clean it using a toothbrush

Once you've got everything washed and any damage has been cleaned now you need to dry the system of the distilled water this is when you can use Isopropyl alcohol!

But! it needs to be a high grade Isopropyl alcohol as the lower grades have junk in them that you don't want. And even after this you want to let the parts air dry in a warm oven or sunny window sill.
