Faulty display after replacing HDD

Hi All,

I hope someone can help with this query,

I have replaced a HDD on two imacs same model EMC 2133, but both screen aren't working anymore.

Not my first time replacing HDD on imacs! So not quite sure what I damaged this time!

The image looks a bit washed out it should be a solid grey screen with the blinking question mark in the folder. Is this just a bad picture? Or is the screen color uneven?

OK, lets get to the blinking question mark issue. This implies the system can't find the OS files. So your system IS working which is a good thing. Did you prep up the replacement drive before installing it?

Now we need to ask some questions which will give me a clue what we need to do.

  • What make and model of HD you put in
  • Do you have setup an OS installer drive?
  • Do you still have the original CD/DVD disks that came with the system?

Its the colour of the screen, looks more pink than grey! As for the question mark bit, it's the new HDD which needs formatting.

I would boot up under an external drive to get an image of a white screen to check the display. Did you damage the LVDS cable? Its very easy to do in this series as the cable is on the short side.

I would still like to know what drive you put in as you can have issues here!

i tried a different lcd and lvds cable from another imac and i still got the same pink screen, this time i removed the hdd. i am suspecting the issue might be the lvds port on the logic board! as both screens and both cables are working fine on the other mac.

Can you give us a screenshot of the display with it showing a white page from an app so we can see more clearly whats happening.

If you tried two cables and LCD panels which worked on another system then it could be the GPU card is bad. But before you jump onto that you'll need to test things using an external monitor and use a white page from an app so you have a way to verify the image.
