Unable to erase/inititalize Second Hard drive

I have installed a second hard drive in my Mac Mini using the IFIXIT kit. The drive is recognized by system but I cannot write to, erase or partition the drive.

I know the drive is working as I can mount it in an external case and it works.

What am I doing wrong?

Is this a new drive or one from another system?

You stated you had it working externally was this drive from an external WD drive case you opened to get the drive out? If it was then you can't use it as its hardware linked to the case's USB port logic.

No it is a new drive. I mounted it in my external test case to ensure the drive was functioning.

At this point I think the SATA drive cable is defective or got damaged in the process of the install.

OK thanks.

That being the case I think I will just mount in an external usb3 case and connect to the new thunderport dock I have purchase.
