Shuts down whilst booting

Dual Graphics Mid 2015 15 inch Macbook Pro shuts down whilst booting.

It never reaches the full load bar as it shuts down midway, the shutdown times vary.

First time seems to load longer than subsequent tries.

It still shuts down after: I disconnect the battery, insert a different SSD with MacOS, try re-installing MacOS.

Hardware Diagnosis gives me Faulty Airport Card and Battery.

Finally, it stays on with no issues in Single User Mode indefinitely, where I am able to run commands fsck etc etc. Other than that it shuts down when trying to boot up normally.

With regards.

Dennis

Ooops. I forgot to update this thread after getting it fixed. It's been three years now.

The issue was with the battery. I had the dead battery replaced and the laptop operated fine till I sold it a year ago.

Sorry to tell you your dedicated GPU failed. Went you are running single user mode you're using the built-in graphics services of the CPU (Intel's Iris graphics). During the bootup cycle the dedicated GPU is enabled which is why it fails to finish booting.

Apple has a recall on this issue which you might be able to sneak in on depending on where you live. If you live in the UK then you have a small window here to get the logic board replaced under extended warranty otherwise it's a new logic board or finding someone who can fix your logic board if they can.

Make your way to an Apple Store ASAP! Let them fix this under the extended warranty.

Thank you very much sir, but the problem is, I am in Ghana and I bought it from sometime akin to a yard sale. Can I send it to Apple Store through a middle man or I would have to submit proof of purchase?

Where was it bought? I don't think Ghana has as good a consumer protection as the UK does. Your English phrasing lead me to believe you where in the UK (or educated there).

Sadly it may cost you a bit to get the logic board replaced outside of warranty unless your S/N shows the system was bought in the UK. You'll need to go to the UK Apple Store to get it done. The systems S/N will tell Apple were & when the system was bought. Don't wait to long as time is running out.

For reference here is what IFIXIT sells for a replacement logic board MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Mid 2015, Integrated Graphics) 2.2 GHz 16 GB RAM Logic Board ($700 US)

I bought it used. It came with used appliances imported from a country I have no way of telling (not possible with a serial number check - Using the serial number too to check if its under warranty doesn't give anything meaningful since it requests for my apple ID, an ID that is not paired with this uni

). I had it for around US $150 as it was an untested unit with no charger and those selling it had no clue what it was.

Reapplied Thermal Paste, problem still persists . My next option is ship it to China for repairs. After your reply yesterday I read around a bit and concluded the dGPU will be reflowed or reballed once it gets to China, a temporary fix I guess

I also read about disabling the dGPU in EFI, something I can do, but it looks like that can only be done on a machine that can boot once in a while.

A quick google search of MacBook models suffering from gpu failures and extended warranry repairs only bring up 2011 - 2013 models.

By the way I've never left the shores of Ghana since birth.

Regards.
