Hello Nathan. Do you have access to a multimeter to test the individual components on the motherboard? Also, what about a DC power supply and some wire leads to hook up to the motherboard and apply power?

Getting started its really hard to know what to spend money on and how much to spend on tools. I consider these two to be the first "essentials" when it comes to diagnosing motherboard problems after you have ruled out parts problems.

As you get started learning, I recommend you read through as many "Answered" threads as possible in the iFixit forums. There are a lot of similar cases which can be applied to phones that show up on your own desk.

As to learning proper diagnostic procedures, a lot of content available on Youtube will help you to sharpen your critical thinking skill with these boards. I recommend the channels by Jessa at iPad Rehab, Louis at Rossmann Repair Group, and Jason at STS Telecom. They each make a lot of videos where they go step-by-step repairing various DOA devices.

iFixit sells an affordable basic millimeter here:

Once you get serious about motherboard work you will need to upgrade. I recommend the Fluke 115. Fluke is a well established brand so they can be found in some retail stores which sell electronics repair tools.

This in-line USB multimeter from iFixit would also be useful:

Ifixit doesn't seam to sell any power supplies. Her are some options:
