The first 2 things to look at are:

The ac power supply/charger may be faulty. If it is good then I would look at the connector it plugs into on the laptop. It may be bad or not properly attached to the motherboard (has been compromised from use).

how would i go about chacking to see if the ac power adapter is faulty ?

kyle,

You can try it on a different computer. You can buy another one from some place that will let you return it, if it also doesn't charge. To some degree you can use a volt meter to see if there is electricity at the end. But chargers can test good that way and not act up till put under a load.

ABCellars,

what if there is not other computer in the house, and the reson for not trying anyother charger is because of lack of money, is there any indacations i can use to help fix this, because i use my toughbook as a work omputer, but at the moment im layed off

kyle,

On the reverse side of figuring this out. If the indicator light is coming on on your charger plug it into the charging port on the laptop. While paying attention to the charging indicator light on the laptop, try moving the wire around that is plugged into the laptop, you may even try bending it. If the charging and/or power indicator light comes on on the laptop then the wire to the charger is bad. If that doesn't work try moving the charger connector around in the charging port of the laptop. If you can get the power/charging light to light on the laptop then more than likely the charging port is bad or has a bad connection on the motherboard.

ABCellars,

i understand that, but when i plug the cord into the computer , no light comes on and nothing on the screen comes up to tell me that anything is happening

You can test your charger under load if you have some 10W ceramic resisters, the kind used in thermostats ( they look like a white block with wire leads coming from each end. ) place one end of the resister lead on your negative side of the charging dc barrel plug and the other end of the resister to the negative post of your multimeter. and the other positive post of the multimeter in the middle of the barrel connector. then place your multimeter to read amperage. look at the big square part of the adapter and read the label on the back. it will show the amperage level it can produce, next look at your battery and see its charging amperage draw. compare the draw to the reading on your multimeter.

+ Good answer for testing a charger under a load.
