Car accelerated while backing up slowly. Brakes did not stop it.

This happened to me twice. The first time I was backing up and the car sped up while I was applying the brakes. I thought I did something wrong.

The second time it happened, I knew I did nothing to cause the car to accelerate while I was backing up.

I have videos of both incidents from a surveillance camera and it clearly shows that the car was backing up slowly when all of a sudden it accelerated much faster.

There is damage associated with these incidents and I am trying to learn why this would happen and how I can prove it.

Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello Ed,

There are 2 possibilities that would cause it to accelerate unintentionally.

1. The Throttle Position Sensor is defective and needs to be replaced (most likely), or

2. The cruise control system is bad. You would either need to disconnect it manually or electrically disable it-remove the fuse for this device.

Those are the 2 most common issues for your vehicle that would cause sudden acceleration.

I hope this helps!
