Help! My LCD Screen Went Black. Replace LCD or Transfer Data tool?

Help! I was playing with my dog when my Samsung S6 G290v dropped out of my pocket. When I checked my phone, the screen had purple/blue splotches and the touch screen didn't work. Then after a few hours the screen went completely black.

I did some searching and it seems that the LCD screen and/or digitizer is broken and will need to be replaced. Bad news is a new LCD and Digitizer is more expensive than a new refurbished phone! And swapping the LCD screen is a tedious task.

I have a lot of photos, and notes on my phone (I am a writer) that I need to get. I figured I have three options:

  1. Replace the LCD screen and digitizer myself for $100-$130+
  2. Get a refurbished S6 for $90 and transfer the data via software/swap the motherboard
  3. Get all of the data from the phone via computer software and buy a new phone.

Can an expert help me?

Other Notes:

  • When I plug in the USB cable it's in charging mode not file transfer mode, maybe someone knows a hack?
  • I have no Pin/Lock Screen if that makes a difference.
Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Your best bet is to take it to a repair shop that will connect a screen on for data recovery so they can get data off it for you.

Hello jpg,

I would caution buying a modern high end Galaxy for part-swap if you do not have experience removing the back glass panels. Those of us who repair Galaxy phones on a daily basis all strated out cracking the back glass on our first or second attempt. I'm not saying its a bad idea, just plan to possibly need to but a replacement rear glass. The aftermarket backs for your phone can be bought for $5-10. An OEM (gorilla glass) rear can be purchased for over $30, but they can be hard to find unless you live near a shop that has a Samsung Authorized vendor.

Also, be wary of used Galaxy S6 that have screen burn-in (SBI).

If you plan to repair your screen, I would also recommend replacing the 2 year old battery at the same time. Why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone? Same caveat, OEM batteries, a bit more expensive, harder to find.

As to software transfer options note that you will have to access you settings menu and/or hit a confirm button on your display after plugging in a USB cable. By default the phone may not be in the correct USB mode to start a transfer. However, it will be in the correct mode if you have used that same computer for backups in the past and had previously trusted that USB connection.

If you do not care about salvaging the hardware, you could also find a local repair shop that has that part in stock and ask them for data recovery only. We do this all the time. For a screen repair that would normally cost $199 - Galaxy S6 - our shop would offer a $60 data recovery. We disassembly the phone, install a working screen, backup the data, reinstall your broken screen, then charge just for the labor. Any local shop in your area that offers screen repair could certainly offer this type of service. Of course, it just takes twice as much time as a screen repair.

For local shops, always rely on those with dozens or hundreds of reviews, an ask neighbors in the area about that shop. No 5 year old local repair shop can escape a bad reputation among locals, and any good established shop will get glowing reviews for the neighbors.
