My computer randomly shuts down then refuses to start.

Like I said in the title my computer randomly shuts down and refuses to restart. It gets past the bios screen and says something about NTFS on the black screen. I can be sitting here doing nothing and it will shut down. No viruses, I run CCleaner bi-weekly, and I have no idea how to fix it. I built the PC by myself about a year ago and it has been shutting down just recently. A majority of the time I'll leave for six hours and leave it on and when I come back it has shut down. Other times I'm gone for a day or two and it's still running when I come back. Anything?

Are you hearing any beeps when you try to reboot? Without more clues any troubleshooting I do will be guesswork. Educated guesswork but guesswork all the same. It could be anything in the most likely to the least likely order 1. power supply 2. hard drive 3.memory 4.CPU 5.motherboard.

Before I replaced any parts I would consider doing a archive and reinstall of the operating system.

If you are like me you have a spare power supply handy--I would try installing that first then the hard drive--the memory and finally the CPU and motherboard. Good luck

Totally agree with rj713. Jacob, you said "something about NTFS" that leads me to believe that you are having a windows issue that needs to be resolved too. The only thing that has happened to me similar to yours is a bad memory module that caused my computer to shut down without any pattern at all. If you have more than one stick, try to remove them and see if that makes a difference. Check your power supply for any dust dirt and debris as well as your CPU fan and heatsink since it can cause you to shut down too.
