How to separate volume bracket?

Got a phone with a bad volume cable, so I bought a new one. Removed the old cable without a hitch, but ran into an issue with the new cable. The old cable was affixed to a thin metal bracket which is in turn affixed to a larger bracket (the one shown in Step 31 of the Volume Cable Replacement guide, and shown in the photo below). The new cable is affixed to a thin metal bracket (also shown below) so the logical course of action is to separate the the two brackets from the outgoing assembly, then affix the new thin bracket to the old larger bracket, and away we go. Right?

Except, the two brackets appear to be welded together. No amount of heat or prying will separate them, at least not without damage.

How did you get the part? A new part should come with everything so you can just swap it right away
