Retina display not found in system information RMBP 15" L13

The Details:

  • Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina
  • 2.0 Ghz i7 w/ 8gb ram
  • Intel Iris graphics
  • OS X - High Sierra 10.13.2

The Problem:

  • Display isn't being seen by the logic board after removing logic board for battery change, but laptop works using a external monitor. Not a blown backlight, no video is getting to the screen. Everything else with the laptop is fully functional and display was working before service.
  • Not sure if I need to replace the screen, logic board, or worst case scenario, both.

Troubleshooting steps taken:

  • Reboot in SMC, PRAM - No Change
  • Check screen cable/connection - No change
  • Checked for video using a flashlight - No video seen
  • Rebooted in diagnostics, was given "There may be an issue with the display" and "There may be an issue with the grapics processor" followed by the codes VFD002, VFD005, addt'l codes VFD004, VFD001
  • Visually inspected screen cable, screen cable socket and could not see any noticeable damage.

Detailed Description: Prior to the incident, laptop was working normally, no known issues. Battery was at around 1500 cycles and was getting pretty tired so I decided it was time to replace. Followed the full tear-down instructions here on ifixit and used the ifixit battery kit. Only issue from the teardown was a coworker came and distracted me while I was starting out, leading to me forgetting to disconnect the battery until right after I removed the SSD. Once I noticed this, I disconnected the battery and continued the process. Swapped in the new battery and reassembly was uneventful. Attempted to turn on the laptop and got the normal boot chime but a black screen. Checked with a flashlight to see if the backlight was just failed, and nothing. Rechecked the screen cable and no issues found. Did a PRAM and SMC restart, nothing. Plugged in the laptop to an external monitor through HDMI and everything is functioning normally. Checked the system information and the external monitor was listed there, but the retina display was not listed. I also tried unplugging the monitor and taking a screen shot just for giggles and no change. It seems to me like the logic board just isn't recognizing or able to find the display. Any thoughts on how to fix this or test to see whether the problem lies with the screen or with the logic board? Thank you!

NOTE: S24D300 is my 24" Samsung monitor

Sounds like you may have not fully reseat the cable or damaged the display cable or its connection on the logic board.

Can you take some good detailed images of how it looks now and the cable's end (both sides) as well as the logic board connector. Do make sure you've disconnected the battery first.

Well, turns out the connector did get damaged. Broke out the macro lens and it looks like the last 3 pin on the right side of the cable end got bent/snapped. Dang. I should be able to replace that LVDS cable correct? Also, I can't tell for certain from the photo, but it looks like the third pin from the right of the connector may be damaged on the logic board? If that's the case, what are the options for replacing the connector?

Thoughts? Thank you for your help so far Dan!

I have a similar issue with a MBP retina 13". I was told that it might be the fuse for the display (there's a small white letter P on the fuse). I'm waiting for the part to come in so that I can replace the fuse.

If you can't see the display within System Report you have a bad cable like Neil did.

You should be able to connect an external monitor to see your systems desktop or shine a flashlight into the Apple logo in the lid you should see your desktop & its icons. If that is the case you do have a backlight issue.

My display shows up in the system report, but the screen is completely black when I shine a flashlight. Works with an external monitor. Apple logo does not light up. Basically brand new M1 MBP.

by

@Paul E Williams - Your backlight is bad if the logo doesn't light up and if you shine a flashlight through the Apple logo you should see the faint images or your desktop and its icons. If not then you likely have liquid damage on the logic board LVDS connection so both backlight power and the displays signals aren't getting to the LCD.
