The game you are playing is pushing your system beyond what it can support.

This can be because the system is overheating from lack of cooling (dust buildup in the fan's and/or needed new thermal paste) you also could just running the system beyond what it can offer (needs more RAM or better storage).

Many online games are to graphically intense for these older systems as well.

Update (02/27/2018)

Give your system a good dust out using a soft paint brush and a can of can'ed air. Use small short blasts and use care with the brush as it can snag the small chip components. Clean the fan's and the heat sink fins. As far as thermal past you may want to install TG Pro (full version) so you can monitor the difference your cleaning did as well as when you redo the thermal paste. It seems more likely that it may be the thermal paste because the game I am playing is dominoes and I don't believe that that would cause overheating, but I must say that it does happen when I try to play any of the COD games as well.
