Why does the trackpad only respond to a click in the bottom center?

I bought a used MacBook Pro 13" A1278. The trackpad responds fine as far as moving the pointer but will only click on something by tapping in the bottom center of the trackpad. I don't feel any swelling of the battery. I've tried the following things that others suggested:

-using a razor blade to go around the edges of the trackpad

-using alcohol around the edges of the trackpad

-holding down option, command, p, and r keys while starting the laptop

-pressing hard and holding all around the trackpad

-hitting the trackpad in various spots

Any ideas as to why this is happening? I'm not willing to open the shell of the laptop. I may just return it to the seller or use the Square Trade warranty I purchased. I thought I'd try this forum first to see if there could be an easy fix that I'm missing. Thanks.

theres no easy fix other that dosnt involve removing the case I can help you possible identify the problem though sometimes you don't realise the battery is swelling because it can be individual cells such as the one under the trackpad, what is the quality of your battery dose it show "service" in the navigation bar? dose the trackpad make the clicking noise but just doesn't respond or is there no click at all.

The battery doesn't show service in the navigation bar. The trackpad does click but doesn't select where you've clicked. Thanks for your response. I'm returning the laptop to the seller on eBay as I don't want to mess with it.

yeah that definitely sounds like a faulty trackpad if possible you can take it to an apple store for a free diagnostic which u can then send on to the bay seller as proof its faulty
