Why can't I fill my gas tank all the way

I have tried multiple times at many different gas stations to fill my gas tank fully. I fill my tank and the pump clicks off. When I go to start the vehicle up again I notice that it has only filled about 5/8ths of the way up. No service lights have shown up. Attempting to continue filling after the pump shuts off only works for a few seconds before it clicks off again.

It is more than likely your fuel gauge and not your tank that is the problem. Fuel gauges are no more than psychological placebo's. They are there to make you 'feel' good. There is plenty of admissions and evidence that manufacturers exaggerate the rate of decline to make it look like you're getting good fuel economy.

Failing all that, it could be a vapour lock. Might be time you checked all your evap hoses to see if they are in good condition.
