Why do I have no display and no external video?

The screen just went black. It was sitting on a desk, not dropped or bumped or anything.

The external video port isn't working now either, and when the lid is closed, the sleep light doesn't glow. I have held a light next to the screen, but there's nothing.

The machine starts up, chimes and I hear the HD spinning, so it seems everything else is working.

What's wrong and what can I do to fix it?

Chosen Solution

A. Hook it up in Target Mode to another Mac. Connect the two machine via a firewire cable and start the ill machine up holding down the "T" key. The hard drive icon should appears of the desktop of the other machine. Run disk Utilities on the drive and see if you can repair it.

B. Insert your system installation disk and start up holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities -> Disk Utility. See if the drive shows up on the left hand side. If so then see if it can be repaired.
