Battery Ground Clip - how important?

I recently replaced the battery on an old iPhone 4s to pass on to a grandparent who just needs a phone. I purchased the kit from iFixit and it all worked great - so well in fact that I decided to do it on ANOTHER old 4s I had laying around.

In this second phone, there was NO battery ground clip as there was in the first re-install. Obviously someone else has been inside this phone before.

My questions are:

1. I am sure this ground clip is important, but how so?

2. I would be happy to open the phone back up and install one....but where do I get one?

Hi @robertrvt ,

Is this what you are referring to?

Here is another supplier if the 1st one is not suitable. It is not a recommendation to use either supplier. They are shown to give the purpose of the clip (1st link) and the cost of the part (2nd link).

Just search online for iPhone 4S battery grounding clip to find suppliers that suit you best

Hopefully this is of some help.

That black and gold clip that goes on the battery connector screw isn't really important in my opinion, I can't tell the difference with it on or not.

Jayeff & Ben, thank you for the replies....I will track down the part and put it back together. Oddly it seems easier to find this part in other places than the USA....BUT...the question remains; what does this do? It is grounding the battery to the back cover of the phone...but does that make the battery last longer? Does this increase the ability for the phone to get cell reception ?

At this point, just curious. Obviously it was put there for some reason!

Hi @robertrvt ,

"Grounding" of equipment can be used for many purposes, One is to keep parts of the circuit at the same potential with regard to the battery supply voltage. This can prevent feedback paths due to potential differences which may impact on the performance of components. It may also simplify circuit design.

Here is a link that briefly describes situations where it is used. http://www.learningaboutelectronics.com/...
