My Mac Is Dying Repeatedly

Block Image

Block Image

Hello,

I just replaced the battery on my Mac. Mac model a1398 with battery model a1417 because I thought that was the issue as it was pretty worn out. But the Mac keeps dying.

On the far left the copper point with a screw looks heat damage. Could possibly be water damage from the previous owner though I've had it for over 2 years.

When powered on sometimes it works, every hour or so for 15 minutes then crashes and won't turn back on. When battery is disconnected and plugged back in to restart, the fans run but there is no display.

Could it be compromised by viruses? Or parts damage? Do I have to remove the logic board or should I try a recovery mode?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Lets see if we can gets some diagnostic clarity and rule out some of the simpler issues.

  • Do you know if it had gotten wet or dropped?
  • When the MagSafe is connected what is the color of the cords LED? Green or Orange.
  • Inspect your MagSafe adapter & the connector surfaces, refer to this Apple T/N: Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters Also make sure it's the correct adapter for your system. If you see something replace the adapter. Do make sure you get a REAL Apple unit more fakes are showing up online. These fakes can damage your system,
  • Download this free app: CoconutBattery this gem of an app will give you a good view of your batteries health and the status of the charging logic. Post a screen shot of the main screen for us to see as well.

Take some good images of what you believe is damage on the logic board and post them so we can see.

To my knowledge the mac has never been wet.

Charging LED comes up green then goes orange, like normal.

Im using charger for mac A1398, or should I be using the charger to suit the battery which is a1417? Which cant be found without removing the back.

Also, this chat box wont let me upload any pictures. How do I do that?

Ill try the coconut battery app.

I think my computer may just be compromised from dodgy websites

Does it ever get to Green after being Amber?

I think you're getting confused the battery is P/N A1417 (8250 mAh) The system is A1398. The charger is what the A1398 uses from the listing.

As for virus's and trojan's or malware, there out there! But your symptoms don't point to it.

Yes it goes to green when 100%. Thanks dan.

I have added photos. My Mac seems to be slowly getting better with the new battery. Is that normal?

Sounds like you didn't calibrate SMC with the new battery as well as allow the battery to fully charge. Here's a good write up on whats needed: How To Calibrate a Mac Laptop's Power System. You really need to do this process twice. And after the first time reset the SMC following this: How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

Dan I think you're right. All this fuss over an uncalibrated battery is what I'm thinking the issue is. It hasn't shut off for over 24 hours so I guess Its slowly calibrate itself, i hadn't left it for 2 hrs over charge, then drain, and recharge though I guess I'll do that now just to be safe.

You'll hear from me if there's more issues!

I was just in panic mode I guess when I made this

This is becoming a common problem now. It is most likely the GPU Buck converter U8900 on the motherboard and is an issues with the tin solder used by the manufacturer separating from the chip due to heat stress over time.

This is most likely a logic board issues and can be resolved if you have a very nice soldering iron and microscope. Take a look at this video for how to solve it.

Hope this helps! Best of luck
