Yes this is totally possible!! All you need is the right LVDS to DVI or VGA converter. This is basically an LCD controller board. Most desktop LCD monitors have the same LVDS connection that is connected to a controller board which connects to the power cable, inverter, adjustment controls and DVI or VGA connections. There is a guy on ebay that sells the entire kit here:

Just make sure your LCD is compatible. I actually turned a 24 inch iMac that i got on craigslist for $50 that had nothing but the LCD into a desktop monitor this way.

I have a dead 24" iMac (white 2.16). What did you do to make it into an external monitor? Did you use the same ebay module?

Hey sorry for the late reply. What I did was find the LCD part number it will be on a sticker on the back of the LCD then I emailed that guy on ebay, gave him the LCD part number along with specs (dimensions, pixels, ect) he then suggested which kit I needed.

Its pretty simple, mine had nothing but the LCD in it when I bought it. The tricky part is finding space for the controller board inside the case. I cant remember exactly how I did it and I have since repaired the iMac and sold it.

I do remember that I put the controller in the empty space left behind by the power supply, the LVDS is flat so I had no problem connecting it to the LCD. The inverter fit nicely in the space left behind by the logic board. The control panel i had to rout it through the hole where the power cable normally goes into the power supply then I Velcro it to the back of the imac case. I believe I had to purchase a longer cable but i am not sure about that.

I hope this helps, I wish I had taken some pictures of this project. Sorry!
