Phone overheats, freezes, and restarts

Bought this phone used about 16months ago. It was in great condition when I received it, and I have taken good care of it since. The phone started randomly restarting during the colder months of the year and I found that it qualified for the battery replacement through apple. The battery was replaced by the Genius bar (no charge to me) and the phone worked great afterward.

About 6months (give or take a month) ago, the phone began to heat up under normal - heavy use and freeze. It took about 30s or so and the phone would reboot. I'm guessing it would do this because it didn't want to damage the hardware.

Fast forward to today, the phone freezes and restarts at least once a day on light - normal use. I called Apple and they told me that they could take a look at it but most likely they would just issue a replacement phone for more than I was willing to pay.

I would replace the battery again, but I don't think this is the problem. Have I fried some other hardware inside the phone? Not sure what the problem is.

Also, I'd like to note that my charger began to show some signs of arcing (also about 6 months ago) inside the lightning connector. I've cleaned the charger multiple times and decided to buy another one. This one still looks pristine, but I've only been using it for about a month now.

I'm fed up with this phone, but cant sell it with it's problems. I'd like to at least figure out whats wrong with it and see if I could fix it.

So, just replaced battery. When I was in the phone, there was no battery connector bracket. Must be Apple just forgot to replace the bracket when they were in the phone last. I'm guessing that this is what caused the random restarts (when the cable bounced around and came disconnected momentarily). Since I don't have the bracket, I decided to go through with the replacement (since I had already bought the battery). Now the phone restarts about every 2 minutes. Guess I need to go buy that bracket.

Update: almost 3 months of use since the last post. Bought the bracket for the battery connection, but phone started working consistently. Still have not opened the phone to replace bracket. When you drop the phone front face down, the phone starts boot looping and dropping calls. Intentionally dropping it on its back from about a foot shakes the connection back in place and the phone functions properly. Could fix this by opening the phone again to place bracket in, but it works for now so I'm not going to touch it.

Update: about 5 1/2 months after last post. Restart problem was never properly fixed after the battery replacement. I decided to crack open the phone again to install the battery connection bracket. All went well... For a few weeks after what I thought would be the fix, all was fine. The last two weeks the phone is restarting from anything more CPU intensive than making a phone call, watching youtube, or texting (aka no games at all).

Any suggestions?

My thought is to either replace this phone or attempt to get a new motherboard. Not sure which would be cheaper.

I wouldn't be surprised if the battery was making such problems.

First thing that comes to mind is trying with a different battery. If that doesn't work, and a new charging port assembly doesn't help, you might be having issues with your motherboard.

I agree, try another replacement battery first and see how that goes.

Sounds like I’ll be attempting a battery replacement. Thanks for the advice, and I’ll keep you posted.

Are you using original, Apple charger and Lightning cable? Cheap bricks may not be properly grounded and that might be causing the arcing.

Always used the genuine apple power brick and cable until that one started arcing. The replacement cord I bought from mono price and I’m still using the Apple power brick.
