Why won't it start and smells of gas

Car set for awhile d/t bad starter. Upon starting the first time after repair it smelled of gas bad in and out of the car and putted like it was running out of gas. Now we can't get it to start at all but it still smells badly of gas and makes a funny sound when trying to get it to start.

First place I'd check is the fuel rail, which is below the intake manifold on the front of the engine. There is a pressure regulator on the passenger side of the fuel rail that might be leaking. If there isn't fuel in the rail for a while, the rubber sealing o-rings around the pressure regulator can wear out. Check to see if the fuel rail is wet or damp anywhere. It's relatively easy/cheap to replace the o-rings around the fuel rail.

If the fuel rail looks okay, check the fuel filter in the back of the car just in front of the fuel tank. It might be clogged or leaking. Replacing or fixing the fuel filter isn't too hard but it requires specialized GM tools to disconnect the fuel lines. Be cautious with the fuel filter because no matter how careful you are some gas is going to spill!
