Does periodic freeze-up require new logic board?

PB will freeze-up periodically. Sometimes frequently; other times after hours of use. Have run every test suggested, reset PMU, reformatted, reinstalled OS. No cure. One expert suggested a new logic board is needed. Your advice?

Who knows what's wrong. If it were mine I'd take the shotgun approach. Starting with the hard drive. I'd reformat it and use the "write zeros" option to map out an bad blocks. Then take it down to the heat sinks and clean out the heat vents and reapply thermal paste. Use a pencil eraser on the RAM contacts and the battery connector. Blow out the fans. At least if it goes belly up you've done what you could. Who knows it could last years more.

Thanks. I now notice that the computer freezes particularly during downloads, such as software upgrades. Does this help pinpoint the problem?

Did you zero the hard drive? What other things did you do? Any hot spots on the bottom?

Go to system profiler and get the RAM configuration. Do you have the original system installation disk? What color is the 10.5 disk you're using?

Just reformatted the HD (writing zeros) and installed 10.5. System froze several times while configuring the operating system! So I don't think problem is the hard drive. Another fact that may help isolate the problem: I gave the PB to my sister awhile back, and she replaced the 80GB with 150GB (work done by Apple). I think freezing-up began after this (although I'm not certain), but she sent it back to me to fix, which I'm just now getting around to doing. Perhaps some inadvertent mistake was made during this HD installation. However, I'm still thinking the problem is the motherboard. But that's not a cheap item, so I want to exhaust all other options first. Any new thoughts on this?

Is any third-party RAM installed? If so, pull it and see if that makes a difference. I had persistent, difficult to identify problems (freezes, kernel panics, everything) that eventually turned out to be caused by dodgy RAM.

Probably you have a different issue, but this is such an easy check, it is worth doing.
