My xbox allows me to watch dvds but not play games please help

I can watch dvds on my xbox but I can't play games it turns itself off with a red light on the power pack about 5 to 10 minutes into playing a game but I can watch dvds for hours on end and nothing will go off please help me into solving this as I can no longer play games
