How do I upgrade a 15” MBP, & which specific year should I get?

Hi All!

Currently I've got a 13” MacBook Pro retina early 2015 3.1 GHz i7 with 16GB DDR3

I’m running a fairly busy home studio and today my Mac died on me, I know it’s an easy fix (ribbon cable replacement), however it made me realize I need a spare...

If I were to get an older Mac and fit SSD/upgrade RAM, which would be the recommended year and spec, so I could improve to the maximum?

Advice welcome!!!

Thanks!

Phil

Awesome, and could replace the ram and chuck in an SSD??

Sure! You can max out the RAM to 16 GB and you can swap out the HD for a SSD.

While I don't have the exact same system my Early 2011 15"MBP has a 1 TB Samsung SSD (you could even get a larger unit if 1 TB wasn't enough space).

The 13" model MacBook Pro 13" 2.9 GHz i7 (Mid-2012) is also quite good if you want the smaller sized model

The 13" models do have an issue with the HD SATA cable so I would replace it and place some electrical tape on the uppercase when the cable rests to help protect it from rubbing.
