Why is my 30 GB 5th gen iPod video not turning on?

The other day I went jogging with my ipod and it stopped playing. When I looked at it the screen was flickering and not resetting when I tried to reset it. So I charged it on the ihome docking station and it reset and looked like it was working fine. I left it to charge on the station and now (2 days later) it wont turn on and my computer doesn't recognize it. The screen doesn't turn on or anything. Also when its plugged into my computer there is a low squeal noise. I would really like to save the music I have on there if at all possible.

Kara, the very first thing that I would do is to open the iPod and take a look at the battery and the connector. The only part that can make a noise in your iPod should be the HDD. So number one, replace the battery with a new one and see what you get. It would be strictly guessing from here on unless you know that your battery is in good working condition. The battery is for sale here http://www.ifixit.com/iPod-Parts/iPod-Vi... and the instructions are here iPod 5th Generation (Video) Battery Replacement good luck and let us know.
