Vizio M551d-A2 TV Screen Issues - Lines, glass not cracked

The glass is not cracked, but the artifacts/lines on top right of screen are evident.

There has been no confirmation of any physical impact.

  1. Have there been any past incidents where something like this happened without physical impact to screen?
  2. Is there any fix possible that would make a 5 year old flat screen worth trying to repair

I was likely scammed by CaskettMaggot, my fault for being too trusting. Others, beware unless this thread is updated with better news.

@li_ny_1 that is a broken LCD. There is no way to repair it but it has to be replaced. The problem will be finding a replacement since those most often cost more than a new TV. You can try and remove the back of your TV and check the manufacturers label of the panel. With that number do an online search and see if you can find a replacement. Often times you can get a TV of the same make and model as yours, but one that has different problems, and harvest the screen from that. Otherwise the only other thing would be to sell all the boards individually and recover some more for the purchase of a new TV.

Of course, you can always try and contact either Vizio or the retailer from where you purchased the set. Inquire if this is covered under some kind of warranty (unlikely), or try your homeowners insurance

Thanks.

Could this ever happen without something hitting the screen?

Only with some severe tension/flexion on the screen, which is unlikely. Take a look at your images and it appears as if there are circular imprints which could possibly be mistaken for some impact to it. Check the inverted image attached to my answer.

Thanks again!

I have two Vizio 50in TVs bought on the same day (~9mths ago) that started to exhibit the same problems within a month of each other. Vizio says we caused the external damage, though I know we didn't. So if an external force caused this damage (Casper...), how long before this damage appears? Trying to figure out if it didn't happen while we were watching it, then did it get damaged in the box 9 mths ago and just slow to appear? Even my SquareTrade won't cover the warranty. I'm beyond annoyed....

Heather Cota damage like that will show up immediately. It may be minor at first but will spread within day, not months.

This suddenly happened to us as well. It was definitely not physically damaged by us in any way. It's wall-mounted, so nothing touches it. It was working fine. Watched a movie, turned it off, turned it back on two hours later and these lines appeared. My only thoughts are that it could be a small surge that fried a component or something. But we literally did nothing.
