I had this exact machine in for the same problem this week. Cursor worked fine, could not click. Tried adjusting the click screw and still got nothing. I initially assumed it was a swollen battery like Dan stated (it usually is). Removed battery and got the same thing. Worked fine with an external mouse. Had another trackpad in stock with the cable, replaced it and it works fine now. Did not try to further diagnose to see if it was the cable or the pad.

A swelling battery could be the cause. Check your battery using this app: CoconutBattery if your cycles are near 1000 I would recommend you replace the battery. Follow this guide to replace it: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2010 Battery Replacement

Even after replacing your battery the trackpad may need adjusting. Pop the battery out and underneath it you'll see the trackpad. Jump to this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Early 2011 Trackpad Replacement Here we are jumping down to Step30 which goes over the adjustment of the click switch.
