Can I re-install Snow Leopard from a USB connected external drive

I dropped my macbook recently and the dvd drive no longer works. I'm not to concerned since I never use it anyway but I'm wondering if I ever need to if I'd be able to re-install Snow Leopard from a USB connected external drive?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

If you have Snow Leopard installed on that external drive, then use a tool such as SuperDuper to clone that drive to your internal. I suggest you buy a cheap external optical drive as well, as you will probably have to use a cd again in your life.

Thanks...I actually meant from an optical drive...is there any trick to getting my macbook to recognize that I want it to load from the external optical drive...will usb connection work? Someone I asked said a firewire would be necessary

Oh it'll work just fine, I've installed OS's from external optical drives many times, it's simple plug-ang-play, just plug the drive in, and hold option down at boot.

I see now you stated that you don't need to do this, and just wanted to know for reference, In which case, I would suggest doing something like installing on a USB key, or and sd card and using that- a lot more portable than an optical drive.
