Help! Stuck in firmware, won't boot, won't enter bios setup

I've tried about everything but I am stuck. Fixing a friend's Acer Ferarri 4005 laptop. At first I could get into setup. I even ran Ubuntu from a CD to try to find the problem. The hard disc appeared to be fried. Got a new Hard disk, got to the windows OS cd, but the setup would not format the new disk.

Now, it does nothing. Turn it on, and it hangs on the ferarri firmware image with a prompt at the bottom saying "press f2 for setup, press f12 to enter multiboot, etc"

pressing either button does nothing, or it will change to read "please wait" but then-nothing.

Any clues? Tips? Anything?

Thanks.

Michael Alwood, did you get it fixed yet or is it still a problem?

What model of Acer Ferrari is this? Does it have a SATA or an IDE hard drive? Have you tried taking out the new hard drive to see if it will boot and let you get in the BIOS? Have you tried taking out the new hard drive and re-seating it? What led you to believe that the old hard drive was bad? Have you tried the old hard drive in another laptop or if you have a converter on a desktop computer? It is possible that the new hard drive you received is bad, have you tried testing it on another laptop or computer?

It is Acer Ferarri 4005. It is an IDE HD. The old HD could not be formatted or partitioned. New HD would not format from Win 7 install CD.

Now laptop will not enter setup. I cannot get to bios. It just sits as per previous entry.

Michael Alwood, always double, no triple check your work, especially if it causes a lot of errors and changes. I left the Service Manual for the Ferrari on my server. It might help you getting your problem straightened out ;-) good Luck
