Why won't my Instax Mini 9 turn on?

Just bought an instax mini 9. It came with a total of 6 batteries. 4 rechargeables & 2 normal AA. nothing works to get it to turn on. i pushed the power button and the lens opens but nothing else happens. the film is in there. am i skipping a step or is my camera just bad? It's battery powered so i feel like i'm doing something wrong with the batteries. they are in correctly and I even put them in the wrong way just in case & still nothing. someone help I was so excited to use this!!
