Odd screen replacement, lcd shield isn't attached to the screen

So I want to repair my iPhone 5. I've looked at the tutorial here at ifixit. However in my case the iPhones lcd shield isn't attached to the screen, but instead in the phone. The actual screen is only still there because of a few cables at the top of the phone. Can I simply change the screen and if so how do I access the internals for the phone?

Use a razor blade on the sides between the white and silver metal iPhone frame, dig in a bit so you can pop it off, not too much of course.
