Why won't my screen stay locked on a call?

When I am on a call sometimes my screen stays locked and black, but other times it unlocks, which means I press all kinds of buttons with my ear, even ending the call.

the proximity sensor is a small component that detects your face as you are in a call. if your sensor is not blocked off by your face, your phone will not go black in a call.

This could be a failure in the sensor, or in the circuits around it. it could also just be the position of your phone at that time. The proximity sensor also does not function on speakerphone, or with headphones plugged in / bluetooth connected.
