What's the iridescent ring around the camera hole?

So I have an iPhone 5, and I've just successfully completed my first ever screen repair, and now I'd just like to know - what's the purpose of the iridescent ring around the hole for the front-facing camera?

Block Image

The original screen assembly has one, but this iridescent ring is noticeably missing from the replacement screen assembly that I purchased on eBay.

I tested the camera in different lighting conditions, with flash and without, and everything seems to be working fine. I'm sure that ring isn't just there for decoration though, so if someone can tell me what it does, and what the consequences are of not having one, please do.

I'm not exactly certain what this colored ring is there for but I wanted to point out that this is one of things that mark the difference between "original" quality replacement screens and lower cost aftermarkets. This iridescence is most likely caused by the various coatings that Apple requires.
