No power after storm and blackout.

I have a Samsung 51PN4500 plasma TV that isn't displaying a power light and won't turn on. We had a storm last night and a close lightning strike. TV wasn't on at the time. We lost power later during the night too. Now the red power light isn't on and the unit won't power up. I've tried unplugging and holding the power button in for 30 seconds but no luck. Any other ideas other than service?

Sorry it sounds like your power supply got zapped by a power surge.

Now the sad truth, Today many of these older plasma TV's parts are hard to find and many people discover the cost of the repair and parts is more than what one can get a new set for as the price of TV's has dropped so much!

So before you call the repairman, look at what a new set will cost for the same size. Then call the repairman explaining what happened and get a quote for a new power supply and labor.

I would strongly recommend getting a surge suppressor for your set and you might even ask an electrician to come in and put a whole house unit in as well. If you can swing it get a good UPS as they can not only protect the TV and other components they allow you to keep up with the news as well when the power is out.

Well, Samsung is going to dispatch a service tech but I will certainly try to get an idea what they are going to charge me first. TV is only 3 years old--seems like parts shouldn't be an issue.

@mmather243 I am a strong believer in repairing things, or at least determining where the failure is. In your case it could be as simple as a fuse on your power board. You do want to start by removing the back off your set and take a look at the power board. You will find a fuse adjacent to your AC connector. Check that for continuity. Post a couple of good images of your boards with your question so we can see what you see. Use this guide Adding images to an existing question for that. Even if you would replace the complete power board you are still ahead of the game. This can be easily accomplished by almost anyone and does not require the cost for a service call etc.
