Before you start replacing all the parts, try loosening the screws on the power button-sometimes they are overtightened and the button has not "play" in it to make/break connection.

Take a look at the back of front display panel and you'll see the 2 gold prongs of the home button-they often get flattened when you open the phone, lift them up gently with a flathead screw driver. They make contact with top of dock connector... not connector 2. Check that area for any damage

I would hazard a guess at the connectors, the home button is #2 connector if my memory serves me right, I would hazard a guess at the home button being #5 as U can't think of anywhere else that the power button would connect to the logic board, unless of course it's the camera connection?

I would play it safe and strip it apart and just make sure they are connected properly.

you would have to check with your back case, is it a genuine one or the after market china copies, as some of them are faulty, you should take the audio flex from your original housing and switch it with the one in the housing you wish to use, and the home flex, u check for connectivity with a multimeter as your pressing it and depressing it, if its all good there, then it's your system connector that needs replacing. 3gs home flex can be used in a 3g, the pins are longer too.
