If there is power to the appliance but it still seems to be stopped, there may be a problem in one or more of these:

Wiring

Thermostat

Defrost timer

Compressor

Overload and/or relay

Is the thermostat knob turned to the proper setting? If not, reset it.

Next, see if the compressor motor is running

The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of several different components, I recommend contacting a qualified appliance repair technician for further help.

So can the motor freeze?? Husband and I in the middle of renovating a house and living in it at the same time in the winter with no heat on yet so the kitchen gets cold. When we buy groceries so.eone would turn the dial up so things froze then they turn it off or lower to the minimum. Could be turned up down and off daily make it not run no more?? Cause I don't hear nothing all day but the light comes on.

Hi @mirandakaykelly,

What is the make and model number of the refrigerator?

Adjusting the temp control can stop the compressor from operating IF the temperature in the compartments are below the set upper limit where the compressor should be turned on again to keep the temps within the operating limits of the refrigerator i.e. usually from 36°F → 41°F for the refrigerator compartment and -3°F → 3°F for the freezer compartment.

The compressor should be turned on and off to keep the compartments within these limits. How often this occurs depends on how often the doors are opened letting the cold air out (or letting the warmer outside air in - same thing) and the temperature surrounding the refrigerator e.g. overnight it will run less often than during the day due to normal user activity.
