optional battery pack charging issue

when i plug in my i80 to charge the 3 lights on the battery flash 16 times then go solid for 2 or 3 seconds then go out is this some kind of error message like the lights on the printer? if i remember correctly the lights come on while charging and go out when done. also ac adapter is the type without an indicator light.this is only the 2nd time i've tried to charge and i cant find my paperwork on battery and canon support is off line
