Battery Not detecting correctly, tried PRAM and SMC reset

Hi All,

I've been having an issue recently with my macbook pro, the battery isn't being detected by the laptop. The battery status indicator on the side of the laptop has one of the status lights lit, the one that is normally lit at 40% charge or above.

I have tried the usual solutions such as a PRAM and SMC reset. I've also tried swapping in a known good battery which had no effect. The fan isn't running at high RPM which would normally be expected with an SMC issue.

The magsafe charger is showing a green LED.

The macbook doesn't detect the battery at all, it is as if one isn't fitted and coconut battery displays 0 in all fields relating to the battery.

The battery does work once the device is running however it isn't possible to boot the laptop without the power cable. Even though the laptop is running normally on battery power once turned on, there is still no battery icon in the system tray. I've been unable to determine if the battery is being charged normally.

I've not seen this kind of error before and a search online doesn't provide any additional information.

Any advice you're able to offer would be appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Adam

If it's running off battery for a bit once it is on, the issue will be data line related, rather than an issue with battery power getting to the logic board.

It will be one of the following things;

  • Battery indicator (leave unplugged and try to boot, to see if this is pulling the data line down)
  • Battery (unlikely on older models, but possible)
  • Logic board issue (SMC itself, charger IC or the pullup resistors for the data line)

Try the 1st 2 options before looking into the logic board. If you are able to microsolder, I can give you some points to measure to determine if anything else is at fault

Hi,

Many thanks for the prompt response. Disconnecting the battery indicator has done the job and the macbook is detecting the battery again as normal.

As i'm not worried about this feature on the device i've disconnected the component.

Many Thanks,

Adam
