Is it possible to lose pictures and videos after water damage?

Hi there,

Dropped my phone in bathtub about a week ago. It has been in rice ever since and just took it out to turn it on. It turned on but the screen is black. However, I am still receiving notifications and the screen is responding to touch. I am in a panic because there are over 3000 pictures and videos on my phone that I need. When I plugged it into my laptop to see if I could transfer those pics and vids, the file for my phone said "empty" :( Does this mean all my pics and vids are gone for good? Or should I take it into my phone store to see if they can recover them? thank you!

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Did you back your photos up using Google Photos or anything?

Is that something I would have had to do manually? I don't know if I did :( Is there a way I can check?

emailrebanow if you did not have a backup of your files they "may" be lost. One of the bigger issues here is that there is a possibility your computer cannot read your memory/phone due to corrosion etc. "RICE" is not a tool. Rice does nothing to prevent corrosion or to fix your phone. It is an absolute myth. Sorry about that. Now you can try and save your phone and see if you gain access to it.

You must deal with the water damage properly. For that you want to not try to restart/sync the phone. This may further damage your phone. The next thing to do is to clean it. Disassemble your phone using these guides. You must remove all the EMI shields of the logic board. If you do not remove those you are not cleaning 3/4 of the board. Clean everything with +90% (no less than 90%) isopropyl alcohol. Follow this guide, and even so it was written for an Apple 3G all the points are still pertinent to your phone. Pay particular attention to the SMD components, check for charred missing or broken missing. You can then dry the board in an oven or equivalent at 220deg F (not higher;-) for a few hours. Best way to clean it would of course be through an ultrasonic cleaner. Consider professional help with that When it is properly cleaned, replace the battery. All these steps are to avoid delayed failure caused by corrosion. Once all this is done, reassemble your phone and reevaluate. you cannot properly troubleshoot your phone unless you clean it and start with a known-well point. anything is only a guess until it is cleaned. Remember that water damage is the toughest to fix since virtually any part may have failed. So it is possible that your files are lost forever, but unless you try to fix your phone, you'll never know

emailrebanew, you can check if your phone backed up your phone's photos and videos in 3 places. Both require your Gmail login info.

1) https://photos.google.com -- the default Google Photo app would upload photos automagically online.

2) https://plus.google.com -- the google+ app may also upload your photos on to your account online

3) https://www.samsung.com/us/support/owner... -- Some Galaxy phones have a Samsung sign-in where you can backup your phone. 15gb free.
