Can you just replace the small plastic piece (sometimes you can set it back into place)? If not, if the wires are actually broken, then unfortunately yes, you'll need a new motherboard.

There is a small gray plastic clip that fits over the piece which come out of the motherboard, this is the bit that is broken, it locks the ribbon from the battery in place, I haven't been able to find anywhere tha I could get this part from

Brendan, is it the part that slides down on the piece form the logic board that is broken? You could try to get it of an old broken iPod logic board if u have access to one. I know they sometimes sell it on ebay there is also http://www.digikey.com/ and I know they have those parts, but I can not remember the part number. I will leave it as a comment once I get of work

Yes it is the piece that slides to lock the ribbon in place, I have sourced a couple of suppliers and I will just have to wait until i receive it to see if it works. Thanks
