new hard drive

I have a 500 gig hard drive that I was using for my external and I installed it and I want to put snow leopard on it and it will not let me. How do I erase the drive so I can put on SL?

That's a very vague statement -what do you mean by that?

If it has an OS on it, boot from it, insert the install DVD and launch install os X... if not boot from the DVD, start the install process and it will ask where you want to install.

If it doesn't use DiskTools to format the HD.

When you boot from the install disk, you will be able to format the drive, which will in turn let you install the operating system.
