Lets try doing a SMC reset: How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac let see if that resets the battery level setting within it.

If that fails to improve things your battery may have hit its limit. How about running this app to see where you are: CoconutBattery. Take a screenshot of the main screen and post it here for us to see.

Dan, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, resetting SMC didn't work. The MBP chimes, the screen turns gray, Apple logo appears, and start-up bar runs half way, slows down and the power turns off. I'm not sure I can install and run CoconutBattery in its current condition. True? Not true? Anyway - Initial problem: I was listening to music without my MBP connected to power. I ran the battery down. My MBP shut down. I connected it to its MagSafe power source, charged battery until light turned green and, now, the MBP won't start up. I also tried a safe mode restart. No luck. I'm ready to take it apart and disconnect and reconnect battery. Any "round two" advice?

Your system maybe updating its firmware! Apple now updates the firmware during the OS install/update. If your system was in the middle of that that could explain your symptoms.

Lets press and hold the power button for a good 30 seconds, time it ;-}

Then release the button and restart the system up, the system should react fan spins up and the screen shimmers (no display yet) let it be for a good 1/2 hour the system should restart its self again once the firmware is updated. Make sure the system is able to gain access to the internet (WiFi or Ethernet).

If the button doesn't work, pull the battery and wait 30 sec's and then reconnect and restart as above.

Hi Dan, Happy Thanksgiving. I had to take a break (travel and awaiting the trip-tip screwdriver to pull the battery (although now I realize I only needed to unplug it).

So, after waiting a full minute, I plugged the battery back in and did the long restart. The start-up bar made it 3/4ths of the way across and stopped and Mac powered off.

I'm guessing a new battery might help, but I'm checking if anyone can think of something else I could try first.
