Gpu is dead, is this compatible?

Okay so, my gpu (6970m 2go) is dead and i was going to change it. since on many site the price is high, would a GTX 780 M work ?

example : this one : http://www.goo.gl/wmGUho (had to shorten the link)

and if not, is there a way to know which card is compatible ?

I did a lot of repair and pieces change, thanks to ifixit but never an upgrade with a non-apple component and since i need my computer, it would be a nice time to try, giving my mac another boost.

Thanks a lot !

Sylvain

Sorry no, you need the part that was designed for your iMac. The Apple boards have custom firmware and you are also limited to what Apple has used for MXM GPU cards.

Here are your choices:

  • AMD Radeon HD 6770, 512 MB RAM - P/N 661-5967
  • AMD Radeon HD 6970, 1 GB RAM - P/N 661-5968
  • AMD Radeon HD 6970, 2 GB RAM - P/N 661-5969

Do a google search 'Apple 661-5967' to see whats out there. Just be careful! As many of whats sold are not Apple bds or maybe salvaged from a system. It should have a Apple logo'ed sticker on one of the chips.
