Debris appearing during agitation cycle

GE Washer gtwn300m1ws

This morning while doing a load of clothes, I heard a loud screeching sound, that sounded like metal on metal. I tried to investigate a bit, and saw that there was weird debris on our clothes that wasn't there before I put them in. It looked like little brown/blackish greasy leaves. I decided to try to clean the washer thinking it was build up somewhere, so I took out the agitator, cleaned it then tried to do a hot water/bleach cycle with no clothes. I noticed that the debris that I had just cleaned up was back and that it appeared during the agitation cycle.

Any idea what could be causing this? I tried to find the filter to clean it, but there doesn't seem to be one mentioned in the manual and I cannot find it.

- The screech during agitation on this model generally comes from either a load that is too heavy, or the shocks needing to be replaced. GE uses a metal rod to hold the tub in place during shipping. The bracket for this is on the bottom of the tub, and will rub against the metal base of the washer.

- Another possibility is that the hub nut(that secures the spin basket to the drive shaft) underneath the agitator & hub cover has come loose. If this has happened - the drum will rotate off center(loosely), and is probably scraping against the old soap buildup that is most likely caked on your outer tub. Old soap always shows up as a brown, oily residue when wet - and brown flakes when dry.
