My screen displays only vertical lines.

My ruggedized chromebook only displays vertical lines. I've had it for about 6 months, no problems until now. I have tried chrome reset, nothing changes. I don't see where there is a reset button on the chromebook itself. I wonder if this is a hardware or cabling issue and if so, can I do the repair myself?? I found the tear down manual on this site, seems simple enough. But what if I need to replace something? where does one acquire repair parts?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

@gingercleao once you connect an external monitor and that displays no stripes, you know that it is your LCD display. If it does show stripes as well then your issue will be with the motherboard (GPU circuitry).

This is probably a hardware failure on the display. You should try to connect to an external monitor to see if the vertical stripes show up there, if the stripes show up on the external monitor then it is the laptop display that is failing.

Since you only had the chromebook for 6 months it may be in warranty. Save yourself some money and check for a local repair certified for Asus. If it is out of warranty then the manual will help, replacement is not hard. The manual should have the part number and you can google it or contact Asus.
