Thermostat Replacement (Smart Fortwo 2009)

Hi,

I am trying to replace the thermostat in my smart car. Could you please provide me with a guide step by step with pictures if you have on how to replace it?

Thanks a lot for all your help. I was able to change the thermostat and put it back without removing the intake maifold. Tomorrow I will start instaling things on reverse order. I think that I will strugle with the alternator timing built. I also did it without draining the coolant. Should I do it if so, how? Then I beleive that I have to bleed it. Any help with both proceses wil be apreciatrd!

@mario1981 check this video. Definitely a PITA to repalce the thermostat.

The steps are as follows:

Remove/install

1 Drain coolant

2 Release rear drive module

3 Remove fender liner in right rear fender

4 Remove poly-V belt

5 Remove intake manifold (2)

6 Unscrew nut (3) on alternator (G2) and remove charge current line (4)

7 Remove bolt (5) on alternator (G2) on timing case cover

8 Loosen bolt (6) and swivel alternator (G2) upwards

9 Remove bolts (7) and lay coolant line (8) with attached coolant hoses to one side

10 Remove bolt (9) on holder (10) on the oil pan

11 Remove bolts(11) and pass coolant thermostat (1) under the coolant line (8)

Catch coolant in a suitable vessel.

12 Loosen clamps (12) and detach coolant hoses (13) from coolant thermostat (1)

Note installation locations for coolant hoses (13). Installation: Replace clamps (12).

13 Remove holder (10) on coolant thermostat (1) When replacing coolant thermostat (1).

14 Install in the reverse order

Thank you for replying. My question is how can you take the intake out? It is hard to take out. Is it connected to anything from the back-side?

Seems like nothing on this vehicle is easy or straight forward. I'll attach the documentation on how to remove the intake manifold with my original answer.
