Cassette deck stopped working

Hi I recently played a tape, but deck started making a loud clicking noise I had never heard before. I was concerned so I stopped tape and reinserted, but then it made another weird noise like it was starting up, but couldn't and then it didn't play the tape. I never had this problem before with the deck so I believe it's the tape itself that caused deck to stop working. Do I need to get a new stereo or can deck be saved?

Impossible to say without seeing it, but my guess is that one of the rubber belts has perished. If you take it apart and look inside you may well be able to see, and in theory, belts can be replaced, but it's not for the faint hearted. If the tape isn't chewed up then it's not likely the tape itself was the cause.
