Is there something that can kill a power supply?

I have a mid 2009 27” iMac that had a dead power supply, it died back in July of 2016 and I never got it fixed because I was quoted 700+ dollars.

Finally, I just ordered one from amazon and my husband put it in using the IFIXIT guides. It worked perfectly for 8 days than starting making this weird buzzing sound.

The next day my power in the room went off (never happened before) and the iMac won't turn on now -_- 2nd bad power supply?

How does that happen? Was it just a bad replacement or is something in the iMac killing the power supplies? They are replacing the part but I'm scared to put in it and have something ruin it!

What power went out? Power cut? If so it could be a fuse that may have damaged it.

Hi Delila I will be glad to help you I will suggest to try a different power cord before trying another power supply. You can get it here since I didn't find it on ifixit website http://amzn.to/2xwpgGq it can also be the ac inlet issue but follow up with me when you try a new power cord first. I will also suggest getting a surge protector outlet or a UPS specially on expensive consumer electronics.

Thank you . I just ordered a power cord so I will try that first . I just don't want to put a third power supply into it and have it get ruined too . I have always had the computer on a surge protector .

Overtime a surge suppressor can loose it’s efficacy if you get lots of power spikes or lightning storms. So if it’s on the old side you might want to replace it as well and do make sure it’s a real surge suppressor as some power strips look the same and offer no protection!

I bought a new power cord and it turned on ! It is still making this weird humming noise in the back , kinda like when you hear electricity go through power lines . It’s hard to describe . Is that the power supply ? I don’t want to send the power supply back until I know it’s not gonna “ die” again ! We actually just purchased the power supplies because our room only has one outlet . Lol

Hello Again Yes that humming sound is called a coil squeal that power supply could've been refurbish I will suggest returning that one and getting another one from a different seller. It wont die on you guys, you will just be annoyed lol.

The source of the power supply could be a factor on why it died and might have tripped your house fuse/breaker when it blew.

Some suppliers recover parts for resale from discarded systems. Others offer new units. So it can be difficult knowing what you got and if the power supply was defective from the start. The fact the supplier is shipping a replacement for free is good! That means they are standing up for what they sell.

When you finially open the system up do a good inspection to see what was damaged on the supply and if anything else got damaged. If you can take some good pictures and post them here for us to see if you have any question on what you see.

Similar example: I was trying to fix a Time Machine power board the other day. It has been damaged by a power surge.

Made a mistake and missed something.

When I plugged to test, it blew up again and tripped the breaker. It was not connected to the rest of the system. The failure was in the power board itself. Those boards convert 100-240 50/60Hz to a few Volts /VDC, and the caps can store a lot of current so be careful working with them.

So I agree with @danj and I believe that board may have been poorly refurbished OR like @xterminal said, due to a bad power cord (test it for total or partial short between the two lines)>

Note that this incident may also have damaged the power outlet in the wall.
