Speakerphone not working but close mic and voice recorder work

Hi all,

A few days ago the speakerphone function on my S5 stopped working. The close mic (earpiece, holding phone to the ear) still works fine. Testing using voice recorder shows that BOTH mics still pick up sound fine (in interview mode), the top mic less so but still of a noticeable volume. Video recording with sound using the camera app still works fine.

In fact, the "speakerphone" mic is only broken during calls from the native phone app and using Skype, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp (both with and without video, though the close mic still works).

The opposite party can still hear if I "flick" the phone, there's a clicking noise, but no audible voice (despite me speaking loudly). Confirmed using the Skype echo.

So I can record a video of myself speaking fine, presumably using the same microphone and camera as the messaging apps, then have no/very low volume when making a video call. The same apps will record my voice fine using the voice recording component of the app. It's just during the audio or video calls when it breaks down.

Tried reboot, safe mode, clearing cache, turning off/on noise cancellation, changing app permissions (within reason), and a few other things I forgot.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Go into your android recovery menu and clear the cache partition and see if that helps.

Turn the Galaxy S5 off using the power key followed by the power off option

Press and hold the Home, Power and Volume up key until the handset vibrates

When the handset vibrates, let go of the Power button

When the recovery screen appears release the other two buttons.

Use the Volume down key to select wipe cache partition

Select with the Power button

This does not clear your data so dont worry about lossing data.

Hope this helps

have you checked to see if a new app was installed close to the date it stopped working as some app do control mic and speaker function . you may need to stop an app to regain control

I have uninstalled apps that I installed close to the date and force stopped or removed permissions for other apps, but there's quite a list and I didn't want to touch the system apps. I was trying to avoid some kind of factory reset if at all possible. Many thanks for advice already provided!

I searched proximity in apps found an app called SMART?? Was not using it but still many permissions on including something about proximity. Turned it and all the others off. (My phone is in wallet type case) Tried a call and speakerphone now works.
