Sound won't come on for 15mins

We have an LG tv that is a out 3 years old. Recently when I turn on the tv for the first time of the day the picture will come on, but there is no sound for about 15mins. Once the sound comes on, I can turn the tv off for a a few mins, than back on and the sound works. If its off for more than about a half hr the sound will disappear again when turned back on. Any suggestions as to my problem?

Also, I'm been considering a sound system and receiver for sometime now. Is it possible to hook up a system directly to the cable box and thus bypassing any audio problems inside the tv?

@donnyo try to hook it up to the TV and see if it works immediately. The issue you seem to run into is either some caps or MOSFET on the built in TV amp. These are really not high quality and do fail. We might have more information for you if you can tell us what model your TV is and take a couple of good pictures of your boards. That way we can see what you are looking at. Use this guide Adding images to an existing question for that.
