Why is my MagSafe 2 charger randomly not working?

I recently bought this used MacBook pro, and initially it worked well. Then I started noticing that the fan randomly speeds up even though the MacBook is cool to the touch. So I used a software to manually set the fan speed and it showed me 0 RPM for the fan, and wouldn't manually change the speed. I did multiple SMC resets but no change.

After some time I started using development apps like Xcode and Android Studio, and the MagSafe charger stopped working. At first I would reconnect the plug or the connecter and it would start working. But now the charger doesn't work for hours.

I use the charger when the battery is around 20%, I plug in the charger and the connector and there is no green or orange light, nor is there any reaction on the MacBook.

Then I took the same charger and connected it to my brother's brand new MacBook (2015 Model) and the light turns on. But when I use it on my own afterwards, my MacBook doesn't charge.

Then I tried my brother's MacBook charger on mine and that worked, my MacBook started charging. After about 2 minutes I used my charger and it started working as well. This has happened multiple times so far and I can't figure out what the problem is.

My charger even started working after I used it on a friends MacBook Air and then immediately on mine. That only happened once and I don't know why.

Is there anyway to figure out the actual problem? Should I get a new charger?

Also I live in a country where it's hard to find reliable persons for repairs or replacement equipment and hardware.

Answer this question I have this problem too

First unplug the charger from the wall and turn the Macbook off.

Try to clean the MagSafe 2 contacts with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol.

Both the laptop and the charger sides should be cleaned.

Hope this helps.

In that case, yes get a new charger. Only get an Apple charger from a real authorised dealer. Which country? Maybe I can suggest locations that are reliable.

I live in Karachi, Pakistan. There is an authorised dealer here, but I want to be sure the problem is with the charger before I buy an expensive charger.

@nomansaboor - review this Apple T/N see if any of the other points could be your issue: Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters.

You may want to read this as well. One of the biggest issue many people face is crappy cloned chargers which are both a safety risk but also can harm your computer. While more money in the long haul you'll be better off. Here's a good write up: Lacking safety features, cheap MacBook chargers create big sparks

@nomansaboor, you can take your laptop in a few times and try the ones they have on display a few times, right?
